Unit 1

Unit 1. Listening. Activity one. Listen to three students talking about themselves. What is each of the students talking about? Take the correct boxes. Look at the example.

Speaker 1

Hello, my name is Stefan and I come from Hamburg, a large city in the north of Germany. I live in a small house with my parents and my sister Claudia. She's 16, four years older than me, so she doesn't have time to play with me. When she finishes her homework, she enjoys going out with her friend. I don't really mind because I've got my hamster Sebastian to play with. I love playing with him in the garden, but we're always careful because there are a lot of cats around.

Speaker 2

Hi, I'm Caroline and I'm Irish. I live with my parents and my brother Adam. Every morning, I walk to school. Together with my brother and my best friend Anne. Anne and I are in the second year of secondary school and we both love classical music and dancing. I listen to music all the time and I also have ballet lessons twice a week. I want to start having piano lessons, but I haven't got much time this year. When I grow up, I want to become a professional dancer.

Speaker 3

Hi I'm Romick and I'm 12. I'm from Poland and I live in a flat in the central of Warsaw, the capital city. It's a nice place, but we don't have a garden. My favorite school subjects are history and geography. You see, I'm interested in the journeys of great explorers and the adventures of great heroes. I hate math though because it's very difficult. In my free time, I enjoy skiing and ice skating. I also like collecting stamps and playing my guitar.

Unit 2

Unit 2, Listening. Activity One. Listen to a telephone conversation between two friends. Tick where Lorraine wants to go while in Glasgow.

Speaker 1
Hi, Lorraine, it's me, Susan.

Speaker 2
Susan, How are you? We haven't spoken to each other for a long time. What's it like in your new town?

Speaker 1
You mean city, don't you? Glasgow is such a big place. It's certainly nothing like Braintree.

Speaker 2
I'm sure it isn't. I've heard Glasgow is a very interesting city. Come on, tell me about it.

Speaker 1
Well, yes Glasgow is an interesting city, but I sometimes miss Braintree for its peace and quiet. Anyway, one of the nicest things in Glasgow is the architecture. There are a lot of beautiful buildings, really.

Speaker 2
Have you visited any historical buildings or other sites?

Speaker 1
Well, at the weekend my parents visited a cathedral, which is now a museum, but I haven't been there yet. I went to the Botanic Gardens, Lorraine. It was lovely. You know how much I like flowers. We'll definitely go when you come.

Speaker 2
That sounds nice. And I also want to visit the library. I've heard it's very big. Is that true, Susan?

Speaker 1
Well, believe it or not, it's the largest library in Europe. I remember the library in Braintree and how small it was.

Speaker 2
Come on Susan, you cannot compare them. How about shopping?

Speaker 1
Well, there are big department stores in the city centre. You can find anything you want.
I really like the music sections. I can spend hours there. We'll go shopping when you come, don't you worry. And we'll also go out in the evenings. I live very close to a cinema complex, so we can always see a good film.

Speaker 2
What about a play at the theatre? Susan.

Speaker 1
Oh yes. I forgot that you loved theatrical performances. Sure, why not? There are many theatres in the city centre.

Speaker 2
That's great. I'm so excited. I just can't wait for the Christmas break. You're so lucky, Susan.

Speaker 1
Well, I guess I am. But I miss you and all our friends and brains.

Unit 3

Unit 3

Listening. Activity one. Listen to a boy describing an experience he had. Look at the pictures A to F below and tick the three, which show what happened.

Speaker 1

Last Saturday, my football team, the Blue Socks, played against the Red Socks. It was an important game. Well, we started on time at 2:00 in the afternoon. We were all very excited. We were running and kicking the ball, trying to score a goal. Unfortunately, the game stopped 15 minutes later when two players started fighting. The two coaches tried to separate them, but they couldn't. The fight stopped when the referee sent the players to the dressing rooms. We were all very upset. Anyway, after that we continued playing and at the end of the first half something else happened. A player from the Red Socks kicked me very hard. My leg hurt so much that I fell to the ground. The referee stopped the game again and the doctor came to see my leg. Fortunately, I was all right and we were able to begin the second-half at 3:30. My team was losing 3 -1 and I thought I wouldn't be able to play very well, but I surprised everyone when I took control of the ball, kicked it very hard and scored a goal. It was amazing. Everyone was cheering and shouting. However, at 4:20 when the referee blew his whistle, my team was very disappointed. You see, the Red Socks had scored two more times, so we lost the game by three goals.

Unit 4

Listening. Activity one. Listen to the recording. Two people who are on holiday in Finland are having a conversation in a cafe. What are they talking about? Circle A, B or C?

Speaker 0
Your tea, Madam.

Speaker 2
Oh thank you.

Speaker 1
Karen?

Speaker 2
Mark! What a surprise. What are you doing here in Finland?

Speaker 1
I'm on holiday.

Speaker 2
So am I. Well, I didn't know you were here, too. How long have you been here?

Speaker 1
A week and you?

Speaker 2
Four days. Let's discuss Finland over a cup of tea, shall we?

Speaker 1
Certainly. So tell me, what have you been doing?

Speaker 2
Well, I arrived here in Helsinki on Thursday and spent two days touring the city. I wanted to see the sites visit museums you know.

Speaker 1
I've been to Helsinki before so I didn't go sightseeing this time. Did you like the city?

Speaker 2
Yes, very much. Where did you go?

Speaker 1
Well, I went to northern Finland.

Speaker 2
That's Lapland, right?

Speaker 1
Yes. The place is fascinating. The landscape is magnificent and the people's way of life is so different.

Speaker 2
That's what I've heard too. I'm going to Lapland next week. How did you get there?

Speaker 1
Well, I wanted to see the countryside, so I took the train. It was a beautiful journey. You must go by train to Karen. And at this time of the year, it doesn't get dark at night.

Speaker 2
That sounds amazing. How can you sleep at night?

Speaker 1
It's definitely something different.

Speaker 2
So what did you do there? Tell me.

Speaker 1
I went on this amazing hiking trail called the Four Winds Trail. It takes you through villages in three countries, Finland. Sweden and Norway.

Speaker 2
Hiking. Hey, not a bad idea? I might try that too. There are so many villages and forests to see.

Speaker 1
And lakes, don't forget the lakes. There are 60,000 lakes in Finland. Can you believe it?

Speaker 2
I know I visited a couple of lakes yesterday, the ones closest to Helsinki, that is. And I also went on a boat ride. It was great fun. Did you go on a boat ride in Lapland?

Speaker 1
No, but I did something else. I met some people and we went ice fishing.

Speaker 2
Really, I've seen that on TV. They cut a hole in the ice and then fish, right? Oh, Mark, that's a great experience. Now tell me about the...
